Detailed description

A large-size devotional painting on oil canvas: a kneeling, bearded male figure in profile, raising his arms towards the sky, with his gaze fixed on the light breaking through the clouds. The figure is covered by a warm red tunic and a cool-toned, petrol blue cloak; the drapery's plastic folds suggest academic studies. The background features a gently rolling, Central European landscape with a deep horizon; the upper two-thirds of the image is dominated by a dramatic, swirling cumulus formation, from which a yellowish-white light emerges. The modeling of the skin surfaces is done with smoothed, slightly glazed layers; the contrast of light and shadow is strong yet balanced. In the lower left corner, there is an inscription written in gold paint, which is difficult to read; without a certain reading. The iconography of the composition evokes Christ's prayer at Gethsemane (the red-blue color pair, the raised hand towards the sky, the opening cloud). Its style is historicizing-academic, referring to the workshop work of the first half of the 20th century (around 1930–1950).
