Detailed description
In a vertical composition, the scene revolves around a group of five white-robed monks in front of a monastery entrance. In the center, a kneeling friar embraces and kisses on the mouth a lifeless-looking infant; to the left, a half-naked, kneeling man gestures in supplication, to the right, a hat-wearing peasant with a woven basket and gardening tool. In the background, architecture: a stone-faced façade and a classicizing rotunda, above them a cloudy, leaden sky. The color palette is restrained: stone grays, ochres, and off-whites, enlivened by skin tones and a few red-green accents. The brushwork is flat, forming generous drapery blocks, with light coming from the side; the smooth modeling of the heads reflects Roman late Baroque-Rococo taste. The white habit refers to Cistercian/Premonstratensian iconography, while the resurrection of the child alludes to the miracle of Saint Bernard. The work is a composition 'after Pierre Subleyras', presumably an 18th-century late-19th century copy or follower's work.
