Detailed description
The painting embodies the taste of the late 19th century – early 20th century German Romantic-historicist style. The figure of the wandering piper leaning against the tree trunk evokes the literary and musical topos of medieval minstrels, while the fairytale-like city walls adorned with towers and the river valley call forth the visual world of Rhenish Romanticism. The carefully crafted material surfaces – cloth, fur, leather, and metal sword – appear with decorative detailing; yet, the composition remains tight, with the figure dominating the picture field. The multi-drone bagpipe of the instrument and the “altdeutsch” attire reflect the period's fascination with historical costumes. The size of 41×32.5 cm together with the ornate historicizing frame ensures a significant decorative effect even in a home interior. There is no master signature visible; thus, the work can be evaluated as a quality genre piece by an unknown German-speaking painter, which, through its iconography, relates to the 19th-century reinterpretation of the piper depictions by Dürer and the old German masters. The piece has been preserved in good condition with a uniform surface of varnish.
