Detailed description
Oil painting with a large, dramatic scene: a struggle between horse-mounted gladiators and bulls in the arena of a Roman amphitheater (venatio). The composition is defined by diagonal momentum: in the foreground lies a fallen warrior wearing armor, to the left a black bull with blood streaks, to the right a rearing white horse and a helmeted horseman raising a spear. In the center, a figure in a yellow cloak on a red horse, in the background several soldiers and the crowded stands, with clouds of dust and smoke. The color palette consists of warm earth tones (ochre, umber, reddish hues) and cool greenish grays; light comes from above, plastically modeling the shapes of the horses and muscles. Brushwork is mixed: plastic for the animals, more compact and sketched for the audience. The clothing and weaponry bear idealized ancient characteristics (crested helmet, greaves, short tunic), while the ornate neobaroque gilded frame evokes the taste of the late 19th century. Style direction: academic historicism, likely created in the 1870s–1890s.
