Detailed description
Oil painting, likely painted on canvas and later mounted on board. In the foreground stands a proud rooster on a slightly raised stone, behind it to the left a hen is scratching; both are seen in profile. The composition is dominated by the rooster's mass organized in a triangle, while in the background dense, dark-leaved trees form a wall, behind which glows a golden twilight sky and a landscape to the left revealing water and hills. The color palette is built from warm ochres, umbers, and olive greens; the birds' plumage is detailed with fine, layered, pointed brush strokes, while the background is characterized by a translucent, patchy brush technique. The light-shadow contrast focuses on the main figures, with the rooster's comb highlighted in bright red. In the lower right corner, there is an unreadable signature (‘G. del J…’) and the year 1903. The scene can be interpreted iconographically as a rural genre and animal painting, with a rustic fence. Style direction: late academic naturalism/German genre painting, dating: 1890s – 1910s.
