Detailed description
At the center of the composition stands a charming-faced young peasant girl, her arms crossed as she leans on a rake.
In the background, the last rays of the sunset illuminate the outline of distant trees in shades of red and gold, while the light faintly reflects on the riverbank.
The work is both intimate and melancholic: the girl's gaze is lost in the distance, as if she were contemplating the silence of the day's end.
The painter paid particular attention to the transition of lights – capturing the subtle boundary between dusk and twilight – which bears the most beautiful traits of the era's romantic naturalism.
The figure's classic peasant attire, the white scarf, and the dark vest, along with her posture, refer to the Munich School (academic painters from Munich) discipline of form.
