Detailed description
The 19×19 cm carved and gilded wooden decorative elements are characteristic examples of the late 19th to early 20th-century neobaroque interior design practice. The shape of the objects evokes the ornamentation of classical baroque consoles: a decorative motif ending in a palmette and flame-like bud rises on their voluted, curved bases. The back is planar and has a mounting, indicating a design that can clearly be wall-mounted. The pair of elements likely originally decorated either side of a wall shelf, mirror, or mantelpiece, or formed part of a church or theater interior. The gilding was applied on a red bole base, and while the original surface has worn in places, it presents a uniform, authentic appearance today.
The objects are representative decorative elements typical of neobaroque taste: they are not only structural supports but also independent plastic wedges that often appeared in the bourgeois and lower noble interiors of the turn of the century.
