The composition depicts an intimate, secular scene reinterpreting the theme of Madonna with Child. The young mother and her child appear in a tender gesture: the little boy offers a piece of food to the parrot sitting in the cage, while his mother gently embraces him.

The symbolism of the painting is rich: the fruits (grapes, peaches) are allegories of earthly abundance and the joy of life, while the parrot symbolizes purity but also the exoticism of foreign lands, a common motif in German-Austrian Biedermeier painting.
The master models the faces, the skin surfaces, and the luster of the textiles with sophisticated light treatment; the deep red tone of the draperies and the golden light effect are characteristic of the Munich Academy studies between 1840 and 1860.
