Detailed description
Raffaello Santi: Copy of the Madonna della Seggiola
This is one of Raffaello's most famous Madonna paintings, created around 1513–1514, an oil painting on wood panel, and is currently located in the Palazzo Pitti, Galleria Palatina collection in Florence. The uniqueness of the painting lies in its tondo (circular format), with a diameter of about 71 cm. In the composition, the Virgin Mary intimately embraces the infant Jesus, while the child Saint John gazes at them with reverence. In this work, maternal love, intimacy, and human closeness are more pronounced than symbolic, hieratic elements. The richly colored draperies, the turban-like headwear, and the splendor of the red-green garments reflect the characteristic harmony of Raffaello's mature period.
The painting is considered one of the most perfect representations of mother and child of the Renaissance, which was copied numerous times in the 19th century, becoming widespread in engravings and painted reproductions, thus becoming an iconic image in Christian art.
