Detailed description

This bronze composition presented in pairs fits well into the thematic realm of Claude Michel Clodion, where mythological figures appear in a light-hearted, playful interaction. The hooved figure follows the iconographic type of a faun, who, along with the female and child figures, conveys motifs of joy and fertility associated with the circle of Dionysus. The composition of the two statues consciously responds to each other: the movements, the direction of the bodies, and the distribution of masses create a dialogue between them. The fine detailing and balanced group formation are characteristic examples of the Clodion school's decorative bronze sculpture meant for salons.
