István Korbely: Presentation of a Contemporary Artist

István Korbely (1978, Budapest) is a defining figure in the 21st-century Hungarian contemporary art scene. After graduating from the Secondary School of Fine and Applied Arts and the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, he established his own studio and developed his unique voice through continuous artistic research. In his works, he combines traditional painting techniques with the latest digital media.

His creations are shaped by the visual narrative and the interaction of social spaces. Through his paintings and installations, he explores the boundaries of globalization, identity, and technology. Sensitive color treatment, layered surfaces, and the play with light create parallels between materiality and virtual reality.

Among his outstanding works is the “Digital Palimpsest” series (2012), where he builds multilayered narratives with projections cast onto traditional canvas layers. The “Metropolis Fragment” (2016) installation, with its interactive elements, links the dynamics of urban life with personal memory. His latest series, “Cyber-Providencia” (2021), questions the relationship between AI and human creativity.

Korbely's works have been featured in several domestic and international exhibitions, including those at the Műcsarnok and Ludwig Museum. His art has been recognized with the Derkovits Scholarship (2005), the Munkácsy Mihály Prize (2018), and international scholarships. His artistic creed emphasizes continuous experimentation and dialogue with the audience, highlighting the social relevance of contemporary art.
