Detailed description
Luigi Rossini (1790–1857) brings to life the ancient and medieval architectural heritage of Rome in his engravings. The master paid particular attention to the ancient city walls, gates, and their surroundings, which not only served to protect Rome but also bear witness to the historical development of the eternal city.
The Porta Caelimontana, located near the Caelian Hill, was one of the many city gates of ancient Rome. The gate and the connecting walls were built in the third century during the reign of Emperor Aurelian to defend Rome against barbarian invasions. In Rossini's artwork, these walls bear the marks of time while the meticulous detailing of the architectural elements offers an impressive insight into the past.
This engraving not only reflects the greatness of ancient Rome but also its historical continuity, as the walls are closely associated with medieval and Renaissance architecture in Rome. Rossini's work has become enduring due to his passion for history and art.
