Detailed description

Luigi Rossini (1790–1857)’s art is inseparable from the grand monuments of ancient Rome, which he captured with impressive detail and authenticity. The neoclassical master’s intention was not only to immortalize the buildings but also to showcase their historical and cultural significance, especially in the case of the newly rediscovered and researched monuments.

During the excavations of 1813, previously buried parts of the Colosseum were uncovered to better understand the original structure and operation of the amphitheater. However, the excavations did not last long, as in 1814 the uncovered parts were reburied to protect the remains from the ravages of the weather. Rossini’s work documents this state, immortalizing the impressive monumentality of the ruins and the atmosphere of the parts that emerged from beneath the ground.

The Colosseum, which Emperor Vespasian began to build in A.D. 72, and which his son Titus completed, is one of the greatest architectural wonders of the ancient world. This work by Rossini is not only an artistic representation but also part of the early documentation of archaeological research.
