Detailed description
The oil-on-canvas composition created in the mid-19th century depicts an iconographic scene of the resurrection of Christ. The Savior stands in the center, stepping out of the tomb draped in red, holding a triumphant flag, while the soldiers surrounding him react with astonishment to the miracle. In the background, the crosses of Golgotha and the blue sky suggest the expanse of the transcendent space. The painting's style is folk-like, yet it demonstrates a strong sense of compositional proportion; the bodies are plastic, and the colors are saturated. The work of the unknown painter, likely from Hungary or an Austrian province, stands on the border between religious folk art and academic iconography. Given the size of the painting (105×73 cm) and the classic choice of theme, it could also have been a fragment of an altar painting. It was presumably created between 1840 and 1880, and after restoration, it may serve as a valuable document of 19th-century Hungarian sacred art.
