Detailed description
The 60 x 40 cm oil painting depicts a seated male figure dressed in Renaissance attire in a three-quarter composition. The model is slightly turned to the left, resting his chin on his left hand, while holding an open, thick book with his right hand. The background is a deep reddish-brown tone, a uniform wall surface that highlights the figure portrayed in a dark fur-lined cloak and a wide, soft beret-like headgear. The light-shadow treatment is subdued, with warm side lighting modeling the characteristic face and the plasticity of the hand; the coat's lambskin collar and the lacy shirt collar are detailed with fine, tiny brushstrokes. On the left edge, an ornate, Renaissance chest or table appears with carved front panel motifs. The brushwork is mostly opaque, occasionally translucent, and the surface is slightly cracked, gleaming under a thick layer of varnish. In the upper right field, a faint inscription and date (likely 1927) can be discerned. Iconography: humanist scholar/literate. Style: historicizing, evoking the manner of old masters (especially Rembrandt), likely created in the 1920s-1930s.
