Detailed description

A seated female nude in profile is visible on the bank of a stream, with a head turned to the right and a lowered gaze. The model's light skin tones are built up with warm, creamy, and rosy pastel shades, with the forms modeled through soft transitions and gentle rubbings. The background features looser, patchy vegetation and a water surface; in addition to green, olive, and ochre reflections, vibrant turquoise and blue accents vibrate in the gaps of the canopy. The light highlights the contour of the figure's back and shoulder, with backlight edge lights. The woman sits on a white cloth, holding a cloth in her right hand with which she wipes her foot; the gesture gives an intimate impression of an everyday scene. Instead of brush strokes, there are crayon marks, suggesting a layered, slightly veiled surface characteristic of pastel technique, framed underneath glass. In the lower left corner, there is a faint inscription and a mark reading "POLL/POHL", as well as a fragment of the word "pastel" and a year. Its style is academic-naturalistic, with a secessionist tuning, likely from the period between 1910 and 1930.

Author Candidates

No named creator; the marking is uncertain (POLL/POHL). The following authors emerge as possible candidates based on style/technique:

  • Leo Pohl (active: 1910–1950) – German artist, frequent pastel nudes, soft modeling; the "POHL" reading may fit.

  • Emil Fuchs (active: 1890–1929) – Vienna-rooted, delicate, academic pastel female figures.

  • Paul Émile Chabas (active: 1895–1937) – bathers by the water, translucent, cool lights and delicate skin tones.

  • Leo Putz (active: 1890–1935) – plein air bathers, with greenish reflections and soft outlines.

  • János Vaszary (active: 1896–1937) – elegant, light nudes; the background's patch painting is related.

  • Károly Ferenczy (active: 1890–1917) – nudes placed in nature, plein air lighting.

  • Hans Zatzka (active: 1880–1930) – nymphs, waterside scenes, academic body modeling.

  • Hugo Pohl (active: 1900–1940) – Austrian painter, figurative and landscape pastels; name form may correspond.
