Detailed description

Luigi Rossini (1790–1857) masterfully depicted the most significant and unique architectural monuments of ancient Rome, including Nero's famous Domus Aurea (Golden House). The building complex was constructed by Emperor Nero after 64 AD to showcase the power and luxury of his empire. The residence sprawling over the Palatine Hill and nearby areas was distinguished by its enormous size and luxury, with gilded walls, ceilings decorated with precious stones, and artificial lakes.

Much of the Domus Aurea's buildings were demolished by Vespasian and his successors to make way for the central structures of the Flavian dynasty, such as the Colosseum. However, a few impressive sections of the complex remained on the Palatine Hill, which Rossini vividly captured. The engraving presents the dilapidated vaults and remains of walls on which the grandeur of classical Roman architecture is still recognizable.

Rossini's work highlights the monumentality of the Domus Aurea and its timeless impact while conveying the romantic beauty of the ruins. This depiction serves not only as a memory of Nero's notorious imperial reign but also as a unique example of Roman architecture and art. With this engraving, Rossini's work contributes to the Domus Aurea remaining one of the most well-known symbols of ancient Rome's heritage.
