Detailed description

Luigi Rossini (1790–1857) showcased the engineering wonders of ancient Rome with his masterpieces, particularly highlighting the aqueducts, especially those commissioned by Emperor Nero (A.D. 54–68), which held a prominent place in his art. The aqueducts were among the greatest engineering achievements of ancient Rome, supplying fresh water to various parts of the city.

The remnants found near the Porta San Giovanni supplied water to Nero’s Domus Aurea palace and were part of the Aqua Claudia system. Rossini's engraving not only emphasizes the grand scale of the structures but also immortalizes their dilapidated state, lending a romantic atmosphere to the creation.

The remaining elements of the aqueducts are reminders of Roman engineering expertise and the reign of Nero. Rossini's work presents the monumentality of the ruins and the importance of preserving architectural heritage, while faithfully portraying the former grandeur of the ancient world and its modern interpretation.
